What Is IECEx Certification?

IECEx certification verifies that equipment and protective systems designed for use in potentially explosive atmospheres comply with the requirements of the IECEx international certification scheme. It is widely used for equipment supplied to global markets and for projects where internationally recognized explosion-protection certification is required.

IECEx compliance is demonstrated through the application of suitable explosion protection concepts, selected according to the equipment design, intended application, and hazardous area conditions. Protection concepts such as flameproof enclosures (Ex d), increased safety (Ex e), intrinsic safety (Ex i), and protection by enclosure for dust atmospheres (Ex t) define the applicable testing, documentation, and certification pathway.

ATEX is required for placing Ex equipment on the EU market, while IECEx is an international certification scheme widely used for global projects and procurement. In many cases, IECEx supports international acceptance, but it does not replace ATEX where EU compliance is mandatory.
